IMO Tier III – how IMO reduces environmental impact of ships

07/21/2021

The IMO Tier III emission standards are international regulations designed to reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions from ships. Compliance requires a reduction of about 70% in NOx emissions, which can be achieved by installing a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system. Emigreen® specializes in equipping marine diesel engines with SCR systems that meet the Tier III requirements, as well as retrofitting Tier II engines with external catalytic converters.

The inner workings of the Emigreen® DPF

The Emigreen® DPF is a diesel particulate filter that reduces soot emissions from marine diesel engines. It is designed for easy maintenance by the ship’s crew, ensuring that the ship’s schedule is not interrupted. The system anticipates filter saturation before it occurs and warns the crew to prevent engine problems. The Emigreen® DPF is unique in its ability to regenerate the filter not only when the engine is running at full capacity but also at any engine load, even when the vessel is static or moving slowly. The system uses a modern monolithic ceramic filter to trap carbon particles, and its back pressure on the engine is monitored by the DPF system controller. When the back pressure limit is reached, the system initiates the burn-off process to regenerate the filter. The Emigreen® DPF can be retrofitted with a fuel burner and is compliant with international fuel standards.
